Transition, Group Exhibition curated by Yang Wei, Seventh Art Center, Wenzhou, China

"Transition", the name of the exhibition, not only refers to the logical development of contemporary art, but also refers to the cultural meaning of the exhibition being held in Wenzhou. As everyone knows, Wenzhou is a big manufacturing port in China. Since it has been listed in 1984 as a coastal port city of further opening, Wenzhou's manufacturing developed rapidly and become "the land of manufacturing". Of course the manufacturing tradition of Wenzhou is related to the Wenzhou people's intelligence. They are said to have extraordinary memories and understanding, which are the talents of Wenzhou people to engage in manufacturing. At the same time, Wenzhou's open tradition in history also provides its people with inexhaustible business wisdom. Just like the fact that Wenzhou, as one of the famous seaports for foreign trade, has always been a key position of shipbuilding industry since the Southern Song Dynasty. It is the combination of manufacturing tradition and the consciousness of being open that makes the economic prosperity of Wenzhou. Therefore, the saying of "No business can be done without Wenzhou businessmen" spread, and Wenzhou people's business and the products produced by Wenzhou manufacturing are almost all over the world.

As the forefront of China's reform and opening up, Wenzhou is one of the first group to become rich, and its commodity economy is well developed. However, its manufacturing mode is relatively lagging behind for it is only stay in the stage of product imitation and is far away from independent creation. If this product imitation mode can have an stimulating effect on inland because of the regional difference in the early stage of China's reform and opening up, then the "Copinism" shows its weak and loses competitiveness with the promotion of China's reform and opening up, in which the economy goes through a transition from traditional manufacturing to cultural creative industry. Therefore, Wenzhou gradually takes off the old glories in recent years. The reason of it is nothing but the lack of originality, which is exactly the basic intent of us holding this contemporary art exhibition.
